Transactional Acceleration

Our Tek Era will have ushered a new type of acceleration -- Transactional Acceleration, or Acceleration of Transactions between individuals. I'm sure others have written about this, and I will have to search for the references ... at this point Nonlinear Parker doesn't have the details, but will need to return to this.

Basically, the speed of email / texting/ etc ...creates situations where it seems like the right thing to do is to respond to an email/txt message while the 'flow' is 'on' ... while the feeling is intense ... while all the facts and contexts are at one's finger tips. Tomorrow might be too late ... The day after tomorrow might never come about, if it does, too many things may have happened by then, and all relevance and intensity may have faded.

So where does that leave one ... the pace of communication is accelerated ... one says things one might not have said early on without more deliberation and forethought. It doesn't mean that they wouldn't be said - they might or might not, but if said they would be said after more deliberation ...

However, acceleration makes life interesting ... and opens up a lot of avenues ... some good some bad

Irving John Good (IJ Good), certainly deserves a lot more attention. How did we miss him? Apparently he was indeed well known in some circles .... To my knowledge, he's still alive (age>90). He was directly affiliated with Turing and other key folks ... Statistician by trade ... he's really responsible for the notion of Ultraintelligent Machine and intelligence explosion. What I missed altogether is his early acquaintance with all things computer (in fact his speculations concerning the first Ultraintelligent Machine [UM] list a Atlas Computer Lab affiliation). He was right there at Bletchley Park ... IJGood authored all kinds of interesting material ... a really interesting one is The Scientist Speculates: An Anthology of Partly Baked Ideas ... yet more fascinating ... early involvement with Besicovitch ... Hausdorff measures, fractional dimensions of sets, Mandlebrodt ... and Zipf ... all before they got popular .... ouch ... How did I miss the UM paper for so long .... [the internet and google -misspelled goodle, what would one do with out them???).

In any case ... the question for tonight is how to measure the 'magnitude of nonlinearity'? Is there such a beast as maximal nonlinearity ? [apparently there is - for example this paper on ChaNoXity]

Somitogenesis describes the segmentation of vertebrate embryonic bodies, which is thought to be induced by ultradian clocks (i.e., clocks with relatively short cycles compared to circadian clocks). One candidate for such a clock is the bHLH factor Hes1, forming dimers which repress the transcription of its own encoding gene. Most models for such small autoregulative networks are based on delay equations where a Hill function represents the regulation of transcription. The aim of the present paper is to estimate the Hill coefficient in the switch of an Hes1 oscillator and to suggest a more detailed model of the autoregulative network. The promoter of Hes1 consists of three to four binding sites for Hes1 dimers. Using the sparse data from literature, we find, in contrast to other statements in literature, that there is not much evidence for synergistic binding in the regulatory region of Hes1, and that the Hill coefficient is about three. As a model for the negative feedback loop, we use a Goodwin system and find sustained oscillations for systems with a large enough number of linear differential equations. By a suitable variation of the number of equations, we provide a rational lower bound for the Hill coefficient for such a system. Our results suggest that there exist additional nonlinear processes outside of the regulatory region of Hes1.

The Wikipediat article describes the Rajkumar Hirani directed / Vidhu Vinod Chopra produced film as "a 2006 Indian musical comedy film ... Sanjay Dutt stars in this film as Munna Bhai, a Mumbai (Bombay) underworld don, who begins to see the spirit of Mahatma Gandhi. Through his interactions with the image of Gandhi, Munna Bhai begins to practice what he calls Gandhigiri (Satyagraha, non-violence, and truth) to help ordinary people solve their problems. His sidekick, Circuit, is portrayed by Arshad Warsi."

Apparently this led to a surgence/resurgence of Gandhism now rebuzzed as Gandhigiri

Don't ask certain questions

Nonlinear Reality ---here's yet another ponderable ...Are they nonlinear ... how sharp can you define boundaries? Why were 1540-1560 so productive in inventing news symbols?

Well ... one nonlinear reality possibility is just scrambling the order of time durations. If you sliced up the 'timeline' into many pieces, and then concatenated those pieces randomly (or even just in a different order than the original (reference) timeline, you might experience a nonlinear reality. The End could really come before The Middle ... how's that ??? Huh ... Huh ... Huh ???

Monday Muse

Is there such a thing as a Monday Muse? Are there any muses associated with days of the week or months of the year? Is it all illusion, or is there a morsel of reality hiding somewhere in plain sight? Ponderables to consider.

Occupation: Student of Life

So the Parker ... (or the guy writing this here Nonlinear Parking) decides to see who else lists their occupation as "Occupation: Student of Life"

Its actually pretty amazing ... take a look at these Students of Life.

Simple (apparent) stats:

• There appear to be 500+ bloggers who designate their occupation Student of Life
• Many state a ost-normal age ... 250 ???
• Some provide pictures of themselves, many don't [I don't, yet]
• Some provide their real names, many don't [I don't, yet]
• some state their age, many don't [I don't, yet]

more later, ... maybe years later, maybe seconds later ... who knows ...

Pass Throught the Mirror ...

The Columbia History of Twentieth-Century French Thought by Lawrence David Kritzman, Brian J. Reilly, M. B. DeBevoise has someone writing about passing through the mirror ... in particular Jean Baudrillard says

"if the universe is that which has no double, since nothing exists outside of it, then the simple attempt to bring into existence a point outside of it signifies the attempt, or desire to put an end to the world - in any case to make it somehow pass through the mirror stage, just like any human being, and therefore to definitely scramble its identity".

I have several problems with this

1) the assertion of the that "nothing exists outside of it". Wait a sec ... that's some mighty leap ...
2) how does wanting to create a point outside the universe imply a desire to put an end to the world. Maybe Jean is speaking for Jean ... I wouldn't go generalizing here.
3) attributing a desire to pass through the mirror as a human universal desire ... I never wanted to pass through the mirror. I thought it might be interesting ... but I don't see a mirror and think ... "Hey, I really want to pass through this mirror", In fact, I can't recall anytime thinking this. I can conceive that I might have thought about this ... but ...it doesn't ring a bell.
4) and what's this thing about wanting to scramble the universe ... I might want to scramble some eggs in order to cook them .... but wanting to scramble the universe ... maybe Jean consulted for a Jigsaw puzzle company ...

Maybe the parker is all wet about this.

Nonlinear Combinations ... and Noncombinations

having made the saltus from nonlinear to nonlinear combinations ...we now make the saltus to noncombinations ...

noncombinations was purely random in my mind, until i googled it ... and behold ... there's a federal office of combination products ... [check the FAQs Maam - as Joe Friday would probably say today]

Note though, that despite the discussion of NonCombination Products in the FAQ ... very little direct definition of NonCombination Products is ever given. So if you are not a combination product, satisfying the rigorous definition of combination products, then you must be a NonCombination product. There ... Tat! I don't know if this adds to the discussion ... but the finger tips had to do their strolling over the keyboard on this.

So just in case you're wondering ... here are some of the federal definitions ...

What is a combination product?

A combination product is a product composed of any combination of a drug and a device; a biological product and a device; a drug and a biological product; or a drug, device, and a biological product. Under 21 CFR 3.2 (e), a combination product is defined to include:

1. A product comprised of two or more regulated components (i.e., drug/device, biologic/device, drug/biologic, or drug/device/biologic) that are physically, chemically, or otherwise combined or mixed and produced as a single entity;

2. Two or more separate products packaged together in a single package or as a unit and comprised of drug and device products, device and biological products, or biological and drug products;

3. A drug, device, or biological product packaged separately that according to its investigational plan or proposed labeling is intended for use only with an approved individually specified drug, device, or biological product where both are required to achieve the intended use, indication, or effect and where, upon approval of the proposed product, the labeling of the approved product would need to be changed (e.g., to reflect a change in intended use, dosage form, strength, route of administration, or significant change in dose); or

4. Any investigational drug, device, or biological product packaged separately that according to its proposed labeling is for use only with another individually specified investigational drug, device, or biological product where both are required to achieve the intended use, indication, or effect.


What are some examples of combination products?

Examples of combination products where the components are physically, chemically or otherwise combined (21 CFR 3.2(e)(1)):

* Monoclonal antibody combined with a therapeutic drug
* Device coated or impregnated with a drug or biologic
o Drug-eluting stent; pacing lead with steroid-coated tip; catheter with antimicrobial coating; condom with spermicide
o Skin substitutes with cellular components; orthopedic implant with growth factors
* Prefilled syringes, insulin injector pens, metered dose inhalers, transdermal patches

Examples of combination products where the components are packaged together (21 CFR 3.2(e)(2)):

* Drug or biological product packaged with a delivery device
* Surgical tray with surgical instruments, drapes, and lidocaine or alcohol swabs

Examples of combination products where the components are separately provided but labeled for use together (21 CFR 3.2(e)(3) or (e)(4)):

* Photosensitizing drug and activating laser/light source
* Iontophoretic drug delivery patch and controller

Scent Combinations

Of all the non linear possibilities ....( Nonlinear/Non-linear too) ... scent combinations are pretty interesting. For example -- who would've thunk it that Orange Ginger would be so enticing? Apparently bath&body works did ... they have this aromatherapy line with Orange Ginger .... pretty neat if you asked me .... and it smells really nice and refreshing ....

Non Polynomials on their way ... in fact there are a whole lot of Non-X s possible --- for every X there's probably a Non-X, and the question is, is that Non-X deserving of its own brand?
